Central nervous system (CNS) is composed of two major cell types: neuron and glia. The CNS houses oligodendrocytes for myelin synthesis. Schwann cells are not present in CNS.

Schwann cells are the myelinating cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). They are a variety of glial cells that keep peripheral nerve fibres (both myelinated and unmyelinated) alive. In myelinated axons, Schwann cells form the myelin sheath.
