Due to no sunlight reaching the depths of the ocean floor, the majority of the organisms are either scavengers or detritus feeders. The three main sources of energy and nutrients for deep sea communities are marine snow, whale falls, and chemosynthesis at hydrothermal vents and cold seeps.
