What is essentially the difference bewteen -glucose and -glucose ? What is meant by pyranose structure of glucose ? (3 marks)
The two cyclic hemiacetal forms of glucose differ only in the configuration of the hydroxyl group on the first carbon atom called anomeric carbon. Such isomers i.e. -form and -form are called anomers. -glucose is the monomer unit of strach and -glucose is the monomer unit of cellulose. The six membered cyclic structure of glucose is called pyranose structure.
Pyranose structure of glucose : The six membered ring containing 5 carbon atoms and one oxygen atom because of its resemblance with pyron is called the pyranose form.
