A large number of married couples over the world are childless. It is shocking to know that in India the female partner is often blamed for the couple being childless.    (4 marks)

(a) Why in your opinion the female partner is often blamed for such situations in India ? Mention

      any two values that you as a biology student can promote to check this social evil.

(b) State any two reasons responsible for the cause of infertility.

(c) Suggest a technique that can help the couple to have a child where the problem is with the

      male partner.

(a) (i) Female partner is blamed due to lack of awareness about scientific reasons for infertility.

     (ii) Ours is a male dominated society with a very narrow social mind-set. The female partner is

          blamed for a couple being childless because there exists inequality between sexes.

   Values :

  (i) Awareness to be created that abnormality can occur in both males and females and about 

      infertility issues.

 (ii) Mutual respect towards both the partners in case of the problems and to find the remedy from

       medical experts instead of visiting quacks.

(iii) Educate the childless couple to find the scientific reason for the problem and not believe in



(b) Reasons for infertility :

     (i) Physical (abnormality in reproduction system).

     (ii) Congenital, immunological or psychological reasons.

     (iii) Diseases and drugs could also be a cause.


(c) Techniques that can help the couple to have a child where the problem is with the male partner :

  (i) Artificial Insemination (AI). In this technique, the semen collected either from the husband

      or a healthy donor is artificially into the vagina or the uterus (IUI-intra-uterine insemination) of 

      the female.

  (ii) Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
