Explain the significance of meiocytes in a diploid organism.                                                      (2)

Meiocytes are gamete mother cells which undergo meiosis which reduces chromosome number to half (only one set of chromosomes) in each gamete. Meiocytes form haploid gametes, help to restore 2n (diploidy) through zygote formation or syngamy. It helps to restore chromosome number.          (2)
