Since October 02,2014 "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" has been launched in our country.
(a) Write your views on this initiative giving justification.
(b) As a biologist name two problems that you may face while implementing the Programme
in your locality.
(c) Suggest two remedial methods to overcome these problems.
(a) Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is India's biggest ever cleanliness drive and 3 million Government
employees,school and college students of India participated in this event
Objectives of this programme:
(i) Elimination of open defecation-going in the open spreads microbes.
(ii) Conversion of insanitary toitets to pour-flush toilets.
(iii)Total sanitation of villages through the construction of drains,soakage pits,solid and liquid
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is not just about cleaning the surroundings but also seeking the
participation of people in planting trees,creating trash-free environment,providing sanitation
facilities and paving a way for clean India eventually. This will prevent spreading of epidemic
and endemic diseases. Images of unclean India often become a matter of embarrassment for
Indians therefore it is the right time and opportunity to participate in this drive.
(b) (i) Solid waste management, i,e., separation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable
(ii) Disposal of collected garbage.
(iii) Changing the attitude of the people and society in general towards cleanliness
(c) Remedial methods:
(i) Campaigning and creating awareness among rural poor and uneducated.
(ii) Imposing strict penalties on defaulters.
(iii) Publicity and awareness programmes through television, radio,mass media.
(iv) Using masks and gloves for separation and disposal of different kinds of
