"Determination of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) can help in suggesting the
quality of a water body." Explain.
BOD refers to the amount of oxygen that would be consumed if all the organic matter
in one litre of water were oxidised by bacteria. The BOD test measures the rate of
uptake of oxygen by micro-organisms in a sample of water and thus, indirectly,
BOD is a measure of the organic matter present in the water.
The greater the BOD of water, more is its polluting potential. If water body has low
BOD,it contains less numbers of micro-organisms in it so the water has low BOD,
it contains less numbers of micro-organims in it so the quality of the water body is
good. Aquatic life flourishes in such a water body as it has less polluting potential.
