Why there is a statutory ban on amniocentesis ? Why is this technique so named ?   (2 marks)

Amniocentesis is used to determine the sex of the unborn child. If the foetus is found to be female, it is followed by MTP (Medical Termination of Pregnancy). It is illegal female foeticide. It is dangerous for both for the young mother and the foetus and also affects the male and female sex ratio.

Amniocentesis is a foetal sex determination test. Amniotic fluid surrounding the developing embryo is taken out through a syringe and the chromosome pattern of the foetus in studied. Hence, the name amniocentesis is given.
