Silver crystallizes in face-centered cubic unit cell. Each side of this unit cell has a length of 400 pm. Calculate the radius of the silver atom. (Assume the atoms just touch each other on the diagonal across the face of the unit cell. That is each face atom is touching the four corner atoms.)

Given : a = 400 pm, r = ?

For fcc unit cell : r = $\frac{a}{2\sqrt{2}}$

or r = $\frac{400}{2×1.4142}$ = $\frac{400}{2.828}$ $\therefore$ r = 141.4

$\therefore$ Radius of the silver, r = 141.4 pm
