 (i) Sweetening agents : Those chemical substances which are sweet in taste but do not add any

      calories to our body are called artificial sweetening agents. These are excreted as such through


      Example : Saccharin, aspartame etc.


 (ii) Food preservatives : They are used to prevent spoilage of food due to microbial growth.

      Example : Table salt, vegetable oils, sodium benzoate etc.


(iii) Antibiotics : Those chemical substances which are produced completely or partially by

      chemical synthesis in low concentration and either kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms

      by intervening in their metabolic processes, are known as antibiotics.

      Examples : Tetracycline, Vancomycin.
