8.22 What is meant by ‘disproportionation’? Give two examples of disproportionation reaction in aqueous solution.

Step 1:
Disproportionation is a chemical reaction, typically a redox reaction, in which a substance is simultaneously oxidized and reduced, giving two different products.

Step 2:

For example,

(i) 2Cu+ → Cu2+ + Cu

(ii) 3MnO42-  + 4H+  2MnO42- + MnO2  +2H2O
Mn(lV)          Mn(Vll)       Mn(lV)

Mn (VI) is oxidized to Mn (VII) and reduced to Mn (IV).
