An infinitely long cylinder of radius R is made of an unusual exotic material with refractive index -1 (figure).  The cylinder is placed between two planes whose normals are along the y-direction. The centre of cylinder O lies along the y-axis. An arrow laser beam is directed along the y-direction from the lower plate. The laser source is at a horizontal distance x from the diameter in the y-direction. Find the range of light emitted from the lower plane does not reach the upper plane.

Hint: The deviation of the ray depends on the refractive index of the cylinder.

Step 1: Find the angle of deviation of the ray.

Since, the material is of refractive index -1, θr is negative and θr' positive.
Now,                           θi=θr=θr'
The total deviation of the outcoming ray from the incoming ray is 4θi. Rays shall not reach the receiving plate if,
π24θi3π2                         [angles measured clockwise from the y-axis]

On solving,                    π8θi3π8

Step 2: Find the range of light.

Now,                              sinθi=πR
                                       π8sin-1xR3π8
or                                     π8xR3π8
Thus, for light emitted from the source shall not reach the receiving plate if; 8x38
