Two reasons that make the count of prokaryotic species difficult:
(i) Prokaryotes are microscopic, population is huge, counting is impossible. Their number keeps changing with time depending on various factors including food availability, weather conditions and predation pressure.
(ii) The level of diversity of prokaryotes is very high. A vast majority of prokaryotes live under hidden cracks and pores of rocks and sediments. 2 mark
