Basis of gel electrophoresis:
Cutting of DNA by restriction endonucleases results in fragments of DNA. These fragments can be separated by gel electrophoresis.
It is a technique where charged molecules are separated ontheir molecular weight. Since DNA fragments are negatively charged molecules, they can be separated by forcing them to move towards the anode under an electric field through a medium.
Two ways the products obtained through this technique can be utilised.
(i) DNA fragments purified using gel electrophoresis are used in constructing recombinant DNA by joining them with cloning vectors.
(ii) Cloning of rDNA; DNA fingerprinting 3 mark
